Exploring the Villages of Lake Como

Exploring the Villages of Lake Como

I know what you’re thinking.. Lake Como? Really? Of all the places to see in Italy, Is she really telling me to go to Lake Como? Well.. The answer to that is a resounding YES.. and not just because you might bump into George Clooney. With medieval villages and modern boardwalks lining the shores, cottony clouds blanketing the the neighboring mountains, and Italian Villa’s fit for the Queen, Lake Como is sure to impress even the most skeptical of travelers. There are a few of these quaint little towns that are easily accessible when flying into Milan. The only real question you should ask yourself is:

Which one should I stay in?!

For some Peace and Quiet, Stay in Varenna!

- Oh Varenna.. let me count the ways! If you want your Italian lakeside retreat to feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and thrown your watch away, look no further. For some, it may be TOO quiet, but I found an early October weekend here so refreshing after the bustle of Milan. The best part about Varenna for me was hiking up to Catillo di Vezio for a 360 degree view from above. Also, strolling through the insane gardens of Villa Monestero pretending I was in a fairy tale was pretty great too.

- For a family run, super comfortable, and perfectly placed B&B, check out Divina Vita. A modern take on a tradition B&B, the apartment is fully equipped and not shared. For breakfast Instead, of a buffet with more condiments with food, you get choose real food from a menu at the restaurant below. Like the civilized. It’s amazing.

For Old School Luxury and Shopping til you drop..

Stay in Bellagio!

- Arriving in Bellagio is Special. Like, really special. There are few places that still ooze vintage Hollywood romance the way this little city does. I half expected to see Robin Leach filming and episode of ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.’ If your main goal is to sip Aperol Spritz while seeing and being seen, to promenade along the promenade in a fancy ball gown, or to lounge in a luxious spa while fancy fish suckle your toes.. Bellagio is your spot.

If you’re traveling with family, planning to head across the Swiss border, or not a fan of stairs, Stay in Mennagio!

- Mennagio is sort of in-between Varenna and Bellagio.. It has the quiet, feel of Varenna but overall more modern, like Bellagio. This happens to be where George Clooney spends his Italian summers. Mennagio also has more of a ‘beach area’ than the others, so relaxing waterside is a a favorite activity for the locals. It’s convenient location on the west side of the lake makes it super easy to drive into Switzerland or train through the Alps.
