Empanadas at Caye Caulker Bakery…

After getting settled, my first stop on the Island is alway the bakery. The modest store front has been filling locals and tourist full of fresh cinnamon rolls and chicken empanadas since ‘93. Be sure to get there early as these little devils tend to sell out before noon! Oh, and stock up on Saturday because they're closed on Sundays!

Stuffed Fry Jacks at Errolyns

Breakfast in Caye Caulker is not breakfast if you didn’t go to Errolyns’ House of FryJacks! There is nothing better than savory fried dough, hollowed and stuffed with all the eggs, meats and cheese you can imagine! This is my favorite Belizean staple and it’s sure to be yours as well!

Fried Okra at Barrier Reef…

Cornmeal coated, deep fried and served with a home made aoli you will have you begging for the recipe! Pairs well with an ice cold Belekin and a side of poutine! Barrier Reef is an all walks of life kind of place with something for everyone. You may not know anyone when you get there.. but you will before you leave!

Stewed Chicken at Rainbow Grill.. Or Anywhere!

Stewed or BBQ Chicken with Rice and Peas are probably the most quintessential dishes of Belize. Every restaurant you go to will have their version on the menu and it’s usually the cheapest thing to eat. 5 bucks goes a long way at a roadside BBQ, so if you see a barrel grill with a local stoking the flames, do yourself a favor and stop.

Pupusa’s at La Vida es Bella’s

Honestly, the options for food on this tiny island are endless. But, late night eats are few and far between! With no chain restaurants (thank goodness), I always rely on the pupusa ladies to get me through the nights! Their Burrito concoctions, usually with a hotdog stuffed inside, are what stoner food dreams are made of!
